What’s your score? I got a 16–next time I’m going to brighten my monitor and see if I can do better. 🙂

Blog update: I recently updated the “Figuring Out Your Secondary Shipping Rates” post with details of how to account for the bump to Priority mail that shipping multiple items in the same package can trigger:

“Ship with another item” demystified:
Getting accurate secondary shipping rates doesn’t have to be difficult.

If you’ve been frustrated by not having the easy Paypal shipping link* for your Direct Checkout orders, and have resorted to paying for a label service or copying & pasting the address into the blank shipping label form on Paypal/using the multi-label tool** you might be pleased to learn that US sellers who use Direct Checkout can ship domestic orders through Etsy now–after joining the Shipping Improvements Team:

Seeing Random Ads on Etsy?

The past few weeks there seems to be a larger number than normal of folks coming to the forums complaining about random ads on the site–some expecting that Etsy sold ad space & others knowing there was something wrong on their end but needing help to get rid of the ads.

Here are three quick things to try–one of them should get rid of the non-Etsy ads you are seeing while on the site:

1. Clear your cache–I know it’s a running joke whenever there’s a problem, but it helped at least one person get rid of the ads.

2. Check your browser for add-ons–like a shopping feature or an extra tool bar, and turn it off. If you don’t know how to find where to turn add-ons on & off in your browser, give Google a spin–I’m sure there are many sites that describe how to do it for each browser.

3. Run an anti-virus scan–you may have picked up some ad-ware that should be removed from your computer. There are many good free ones–some online, some you download—see the links in this old forum post here if you’d like to try a new one out:

Over the years I have learned that many Etsy sellers write their listings directly on the site rather than on their own computer, saving it, then transferring the info over to Etsy. (I’m sure this happens on many online venues.)

I understand how easy that is, but you should always keep a back up of your own business data, whether it is for taxes or just for your own records.

If anything ever happens to the original source of info, having a back up can be a real life saver for your business so if you don’t have a copy of all your Etsy items currently listed for sale and a your history of sold orders on Etsy saved to your computer, I encourage you to take a few minutes today and download that data.

Here are links to Etsy’s instructions for downloading your shop’s information:

Download your current listing information

Download your sold transactions

And then follow up by either saving listings to your own computer each time you create one or regularly downloading the data as described in the links above.

Etsy Mini: Flash Version No Longer Works

Heads up: A while ago Etsy stopped offering the flash-based Etsy minis on the page where you create them and the ones that were already in existence seem to have finally stopped working on most sites if not all of them.

Admin stated in the forum that they are no longer supporting the flash mini so there’s no fix in the works so if you used them on your blog, you’ll need to either remove them or to change the code to the java script version:

Guess I’ll be working on the code later myself…

Etsy Update

If you haven’t been in the Etsy forums in a few days you might have missed some news from admin:

Pay online through Etsy (without using Paypal)

Coming soon for all USA sellers (and it seems eventually all sellers), currently rolled out to a small portion of USA sellers.

Some think it’s a great idea, some a terrible idea and some are cautiously optimistic. Read more about what folks think here: Announcing Direct Checkout

Worried that you won’t be able to use Paypal labels for non-paypal transactions? See here for how to use Paypal to print labels outside of a Paypal transaction:
